Slowly going the way of the buffalo

Slowly going the way of the buffalo

... is the title of a classic MXPX album and may well sum up the future of non-commercial website communities.

1998 witnessed the birth of The Frozen Hole. It was a simple and crude site displaying my personal collection of images from travelling the East and South Coasts of our cosy little island for anyone out there in the world to view. It is still out there somewhere believe it or not! Read on for a run down of the history of the site and what the future holds.

As the ‘net’ grew in popularity so did the presence of local bodyboarders online, It opened up a whole new world of contact, meeting and sharing of stories, waves and images. Sites began to appear from the North, East and South and it seemed that the Tassie bodyboard community was emerging from the woodwork at an alarming rate. We had OMSN a tidy little site that showed the antics and travels of a wide spread crew, some of who are still kicking around and loving the Tassie bodyboard lifestyle while others have moved on to pursue other dreams. Today we still have The Frozen Hole (just!) and there is Cut Sick which is run by a crew from Bicheno but it seems that the days of the individual communities are becoming replaced by sites like MySpace and facebook. While I think it sucks I guess it’s just the future of the internet... more people have access to services that make it far easier to put together your own mini site for your mates to see. Some call it evolution!

Anyway, no room for tears here, the site has had many ups and downs over the last 10 years here are a few highlights...

  • THE LAW

  • Once the site gained popularity and presence I was always on the lookout for images to feed the masses who were swarming to the site. A CD full of images fell into my possession and I took it upon myself to promptly throw them up on the site for the world to see. The photog was given full props in all the images to show that I wasn’t trying to steal their ‘thunder’. A few weeks later a received an email from the photog demanding they come down and they were considering legal action to have the site pulled down. Extreme perhaps but still funny as hell as the pics were not really all that good!

  • DON’T SHIT IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

  • Back when the Stern’ was a “secret” spot and images started to filter through the surf media I thought it would be a great idea to add it to the old line-up guide and dropped a hint of doing so on the site. Word traveled fast and I soon had a 5000 word essay from one of the guys who was surfing it at the time. To sum up his love letter to the Stern he said ‘don’t shit in your own backyard until you’ve experienced it’ fair call perhaps but his actions that soon followed showed that it was just a diversion to allow him to go global to the media and plaster every news paper, magazine, television channel with images of him surfing it. Who would have thought a little known bodyboarding site would have posed such a threat of stealing someone’s fame and thunder.

  • HISTORY

  • Not one to back down from annoying the shit out of someone I went ahead and posted what I believe was the first image of Shipstern Bluff on the internet. The photo was borrowed from the now deceased South Arm Surf back in 1995 and scanned to be immortalised in pixels forever! Soon after borrowing this shot and hearing tales of wetsuit arms and legs pulled up to your elbows and knees from wipe-outs, a crew of myself, my Brother Sep and mate Proko went exploring for this ‘secret’ spot and basically drove to the car park and walked along the track that said ‘Shipstern Bluff’ and we had our first glimpse of the wave. Little did we know that this wave was going to put Tasmanian on the world map of surfing.

  • GUESTBOOKS & FORUMS

  • A small novel could be written about the hundreds, possibly thousands of canings that have gone down on the many guestbook’s the site has trialled. Some memories that come to mind were member Andrew wanting to meet someone for a fight at Howrah primary, no idea why it was the first to come to mind but it sure was a great read. These days we have verystrong who likes to think he knows everything about everyone, but makes for a funny read also!

They are just a few of the highlights and lowlights of the site, if I can think of anything else I’ll add it to the list. Also if you have any fond or not so fond memories of your time on The Frozen hole feel free to post them on the forum.

So you are probably wondering what this is all about? Basically I have put together a new site that doesn’t look like a pile of horseshit for those of you who are left and I will be putting the content/photo’s of the site in your hands. I will still be maintaining the site and keeping it look tidy and throwing in a few surprises here and there but not as much as I have previously (I apologise for the neglect of it over the last 12 months!).

Now please sign up to the new forum and let me know you still exist!

The new forum is now going to be the new gallery in a way, all images can be posted there and once a month I will pull the best ones out and put into a nicer looking gallery in the site.

Thanks for your support over the last 10 years!
